MLA-Police Nexus In TS

Hyderabad: The nexus between the police officials and the MLAs in Telangana State has been causing a lot of damage to the society. The MLA who had spent a fortune in the elections were starved of funds initially for a few months after the formation of TRS government.

Earlier there used to be some modest civil works to be executed in the constituencies and the MLAs used to get their usual cut. After TRS came to power, all the funds have been diverted to big projects like Kaleswaram in which the MLAs have no share. Small construction works such as school buildings and road repairs have not been undertaken by the government. There were no sources of income to the MLAs.

Police officials depend on MLAs

Considering the plight of his MLAs, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) had decided to go to their rescue. He had given oral orders that the police officers up to the rank of DSP have to be posted on the recommendation of MLAs. They started collecting bribes to recommend a posting or a transfer. They charge anywhere between Rs. 20 lakh to Rs. 25 lakh for a transfer.

Sand business, mining

It did not stop there. The politicians and police officials have been indulging in sand business and mining. In the process the police officials started working for the MLAs. Where there is no TRS MLA the TRS candidate who lost the last election would call the shots. For instance, in Manthani the sitting Congress MLA D. Sridhar Babu does not have the police at his beck and call. It is Putta Madhukar, who lost 2018 election as TRS candidate and became chairman of Peddapalli Zilla Parishad, who commands the respect of the police officials.

Murder of lawyer couple

The police, therefore, became suspect when the lawyer couple were murdered recently in a village near Manthani in broad day light while two busloads of people were watching. There were allegations that the police and politicians of the ruling party have connived to kill the advocates who were fighting for human rights.

The politicians and the police officials have been together in land grabbing and other nefarious activities.

Through DGP Mahender Reddy has been insisting on counseling the suspects, the police officers at the behest of the MLAs are thrashing people.

Social change among police officials

There used to be mostly Reddys, Velamas and Munnuru Kapus among police officers till recently. Now there are officers from SCs, STs and BCs. They generally don’t beat up people. The recent lockup death of a dalit near Manthani is a rare incident. Police have been very civil in their behaviour. But when it comes to do the bidding of their MLA s they do just as they were told. The government at the top level has to consider the ground realities and do something to salvage the situation.
