Are We Equal?

Indian constitution guarantees equal rights to all Indian citizens irrespective of caste, colour, religion or region. The constitution of this democratic country allows every Indian to follow any religion of his choice but the state or government does not favour any particular religion over others. Consequently giving aid only to some people for visiting their holy places is a partisan act. Similarly the question of special status to certain States or regions is also improper. There can be historical, ethnic, political, economic or cultural reasons for differential treatment for some time. But we would be failing the spirit of the constitution if we continue the special status to some for a long time. Dr Ambedkar, who championed the need for reservations for Scheduled castes and scheduled Tribes wanted reservation only for 20 years. That was accepted by all but it became a problem for others as it is continued indefinitely.

Similarly after India got independence there was a necessity to protect minorities and hence certain priorities were given to them. This too cannot and should not continue forever. There need not be special treatment for any citizen in a country which gives equal status to all. So the concept of a separate status to certain regions, religions, castes cannot be there as it is against the fundamental right, Right to Equality. In a vast country with pluralistic culture all citizens should wish for being treated equally. Let our ethnicity, culture, religion remain confined to our homes and places of prayer. The moment we step out of our homes we should be and behave as humane Indians.
