3-time Assam CM Tarun Gogoi dies listening to Indira’s speeches, Hazarika’s songs

Guwahati: Tarun Gogoi, 86, former chief minister of Assam died on Monday afternoon listening to Indira Gandhi’s  speeches and Bhupen Hazarika’s songs. He has been fighting post-Covid complications for about three months. He was tested positive on25 August. Next day he was admitted to Guwahati Medical College Hospital. He was discharged on finding Covid negative after two months of treatment. But he was admitted to the same hospital again on November 2 due to post-Covid complications. He was put on non-invasive ventilation. On Saturday morning, his condition got deteriorated. Gogoi was 3-time chief minister serving Assam for 15 years and a 6-time MP.

Gaurav Gogoi,  a Member of Lok Sabha and son of Tarun Gogoi, told callers that the hospital authorities had permitted a sound system inside the ICU to enable his father to listen to Bhupen Hazarika’s songs and Indira Gandhi’s speeches. That was also considered a sound therapy. It allowed his father to listen to the prayers of the people. Gaurav said Prime Minister Narendra Modi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi and many other leaders had called his to inquire about his father’s health condition.

A team of nine doctors has been monitoring Tarun Gogoi’s health condiation in consultation with the experts at AIMS in Delhi. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonewal who was touring Diburgarh had cancelled his programme and flew back to Guwahati. Assam Health Minister Himanta Biswas Sarma, who was former colleague of Tarun Gogoi, said there was nothing the doctors could do. “We need a lot of prayers from people for him” said Sarma.
