Presidential Poll: Yashwant Sinha files nomination

Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Farooq Abdullah, Akhilesh Yadav accompany

AAP, JMM absent, Mayawati with NDA

Election will be held on July 18th

Counting, if necessary, will be on July 21st

New Delhi: Opposition Presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha filed nomination papers on Monday for the election due on July 18th while leaders Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah accompanied him. Sinha, who handed over four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha secretary General Mody, thanked opposition parties for unanimously choosing him as their candidate. Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) is yet to decide on whom to support in the Presidential Election and hence its representatives were not seen during Yashwant’s nomination. After filing nomination, Sinha paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi and B,R. Ambedkar at their statues in Parliament complex.

From Telugu States, Andhra Pradesh ruling party, YCP, decided to support NDA’s candidate Draupadi Murmu   while Telangana ruling party, TRS, decided to go against NDA. TRS party supported NDA in the election of President and Vice-President earlier, but in the wake of the war between BJP and TRS in recent months which is filled with alleged politics of hatred and governance failure, party decided to support Opposition parties’ candidate Sinha in 2022 Presidential election.

In a letter addressing opposition parties, “I am overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude towards you and leaders of all opposition parties for choosing me unanimously as your common candidate to contest the Presidential Election, to be held on July 18th, 2022. I thank you for the trust and confidence they have reposed in me. I assure you and people of India that, if elected, I shall conscientiously uphold, without fear or favour, the basic values and guiding ideals of the Indian Constitution. In particular, as the Custodian of the Constitution, I shall not allow the light of Democracy and secularism to be dimmed by the executive” Sinha said

Yashwant Sinha is likely to launch his campaign from Chennai in Tamil Nadu from 28th June. Presidential Election will be held on July 18th and counting will be on July 21st, if necessary.
