Authors of “Freedom at Midnight” tell us that with his background of being a boy scout he thought that he could command an army. He believed that Germans and Japanese will help him fight the British without any benefit for themselves. It is unreasonable to say British were afraid of him and his 60k army (of whom more than 50% died) and so left India.

This idea that British left fearing Bose’s army is propagated by a section of people who want to lessen the image of Gandhi by promoting Patel on one side and Bose on the other.
