Taliban take over Panj Shir?

  • Amrullah Saleh refutes the claim
  • Guns fired in air in Kabul as a mark of victory

There are conflicting reports saying that Panj Shir has fallen to Taliban. A Taliban commander was quoted as saying, “By the grace of Allah Almighty, we are in control of the entire Afghanistan. The troublemakers have been defeated and Panj Shir is now under our control.” Guns were reportedly fired in the air in Kabul as a mark of victory.

However, former vice-president Amrullah Saleh had spoken to India Today to condemn the false news that is making rounds. He said the Taliban have been fighting for five days but they could not achieve anything remarkable. We lost fighters and Taliban also lost its militants. “We have been facing the onslaught by the Taliban, Pakistanis, Al Qaeda and all kinds of terrorist forces. It is a difficult situation. But the fake news that I have fled my country is completely baseless,” Saleh emphasized.

There were reports earlier saying that Amrullah along with commanders of the resisting forces have gone to Tajikistan in two aircraft on Thursday. Saleh told India Today that he was at his base in Panj Shir along with commanders of resistance forces and the politicians.
