KCR challenges Modi in Delhi

  • Says the BJP leadership is ‘besharam’
  • Calls for ’one nation-one procurement’ policy

Telangana Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) had challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to arrest him if he had guts. “If Modi had guts, let him arrest me. Telangana people are not begging. They are demanding their right. I would like to say to the Prime Minister to frame a new agriculture policy and we will also contribute to that. If you do not do it, then you will be removed and the new government will make a new integrated agriculture policy,” said KCR.

“Don’t play with sentiments of farmers who have the power to topple governments. Farmers are not beggars,” he said. “With folded hands, I tell the PM and Union Food Minister Piyush Goyal, to please buy our food grains.I give you 24 hours, after that we will take our decision,” warned KCR.

Telangana Rashtra Samiti, its top leaders, all the Cabinet Ministers of Telangana, all MPs, all MLAs and other important leaders descended on Delhi for one-day dharna against Centre on Monday demanding procurement of 15 lakh tons of paddy from the State. This was for the first time that TRS held a rally in Delhi after coming to power in 2014. The dharna and the meeting took place at Telangana Bhavan. Bill boards and posters saying ‘One nation-One procurement policy’ have been on display throughout the venue. Telangana has been mounting a movement asking the Centre to buy paddy from farmer as is done in Punjab from the current season. KCR has been in Delhi for ten days on account of medical treatment and preparations for dharna. Farmers’ leader Rakesh Tikait has been sitting on the dais throughout the meeting. He expressed solidarity with the farmers of Telangana.

Piyush Goel, Union Minister for Food, became very unpopular when he contested Telangana government demand to buy paddy. Goel said Telangana government had given in writing that it would supply only raw rice and not parboiled rice. Speaking in aggressive tone in Hindi, KCR ridiculed the Prime Minister and Food Minister for their stand on Telangana demand. KCR said the people of Telangana would support any farmers’ movement to be led by Rakesh Tikait whose father, Mahendra Singh Tikait, used to mobilize thousands of farmers with a call.

TBJP President Bandi Sanjay Kumar has been sitting on dharna in Hyderabad on Monday demanding that the State government should procure paddy from farmers. KCR called Bandi and other leaders of the BJP ‘shameless.’
