Impact of Shasikala’s Release from jail on TN Politics

  • Close aide of former CM Jayalalitha
  • In prison for 4 years on corruption charges
  • Her releases to impact electoral chances of AIADMK

Chennai: Huge celebrations were witnessed in front of Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru after police completed formalities of the release Vivekanandan Krishnaveni Sashikala alias Chinnamma. Sweets were distributed; slogans were raised in support to Chinnamma who is undergoing treatment for Corona at Victoria Hospital for a few days. However, she has to stay in hospital for a few more days as per doctors who are treating her. Hospital authorities confirmed to the police and to her followers that she is stable, conscious, alert and well.

Sasikala's release won't have any impact on Tamil Nadu politics, says state's Congress chief - The Economic Times

Now her nephew Dinakaran said that she will be received with huge rally of cars and motor bikes when she gets discharged from Hospital. Dinakaran is an Independent Legislator who launched political party in the name of “Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam(AMMK) after he was expelled from AIADMK.

The release of Sasikala is a matter of  worry  for the groups headed by AIADMK Chief Minister Palaniswami and his deputy Paneerselvam. They maintained distance from Sashikala after she was prisoner and both these leaders tried to prove themselves as true successors of late Jayalalithaa (AMMA) in politics. As  the day of  Sasikala release approached, TN CM Eddapadi Palaniswami inaugurated Jayalalitha’s memorial at Chennai’s Marina Beach in a hurried phase. This was termed as celebration of Sashikala’s release by Dinakaran, who believes that time has come for their party to show strength in assembly elections due in a few months from now.

Sashikala was sentenced to four years imprisonment in 2017 in disproportionate assets case along with her sister in law Ilavarasi. Sasikala was a formidable  force within AIADMK when Jayalalaitha was alive. That profile was hampered when she was in prison. Palaniswami ruled out the possibility of  Sasikala’s re-entry into party but if Chinnamma is able to find some driving force within AIADMK once again, she could emerge as a key player in the assembly elections. BJP and AIADMK may ally for the assembly elections and the chances of BJP accepting Sasikala to join AIADMK once again is a question mark now. Sasikala was expelled from AIADMK and BJP will keep pressure on AIADMK to maintain the same until elections were over. If this is so, Sasikala will continue her fight along with Dinakaran’s AMMK party and the split in the vote bank will help DMK to emerge as winner. TN predictions as per today are favouring Stalin’s DMK as frontrunner and this step of Sashikala will certainly increase chance for DMK to gain more seats than expected.
