New Delhi: Mehul Choksi, who went missing from residence in Antigua and Barbuda, has been arrested by Dominica police on Wednesday night. The Antiguan PMO has asked Dominican Government to deport him directly to India for entering country illegally by treating him a ‘persona non grata’. In diplomatic terms, it refers to situation where diplomatic immunity of an individual from arrest and persecution is revoked.
Mehul Choksi, nephew of Nirav Modi, is in wanted list for siphoning Rs. 14,000 crore of public money from Punjab National Bank (PNB). According to media reports, Choksi who had citizenship of Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda was seen driving in southern area of the island on Sunday, and from there he could not be traced out until Tuesday early hours. Police launched a manhunt to trace the fugitive diamond merchant.
Choksi fled to Antigua in 2018, but before that he took the citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda in 2017 using the method of “citizenship by Investment programme.” His nephew Nirav Modi is in London prison. He was denied bail and is contesting extradition to India.
Choski is facing charges of criminal conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, cheating and dishonesty, corruption and money laundering.
