Hyderabad: The Lingojiguda bypoll result gave a rude shock to saffron party on Monday. Congress party wrested the seat in the bypoll from BJP. Congress party’s candidate D.Rajasekhar Reddy won by a margin of 1200 votes over his nearest rival Akhil Goud (BJP).

Counting took place at Victoria memorial Home school at Kothapet. In a ward consisting of total electorate of 47,379 only 13,591 of them (27%) had cast their votes. Bypoll was necessitated after elected BJP corporator Akula Ramesh Goud passed away even before taking oath. The GHMC elections were held in December 2020. BJP leaders, along with Akhil Goud met Minister KTR and requested them not to file TRS candidate on humanitarian grounds. TRS has not filed candidate at the request of Akhil Goud and BJP leaders. The untimely death of Ramesh goud was unfortunate and decision not to field TRS candidate was taken after discussion with Chief Minister K. Chandrasekha Rao. This decision was hailed by family members of late Ramesh Goud.

But Congress party filed its candidate and the voters gave jolt to BJP at the end. BJP leaders meeting TRS leaders were not liked by voters of Lingojiguda, hence the result, a senior BJP leader said.

It is a severe blow to BJP in Greater Hyderabad which witnessed a decent performance in December 2020 elections. TBJP President Bandi Sanjay is understood to have expressed anguish on local leaders for not retaining the seat.
