Indian women lose match for bronze to Britain

  • Gurjit Kaur’s brace goes in vain
  • Britain wins 4-3

Tokyo: Indian women hockey team went down fighting Great Britain in the match played for the bronze medal on Friday morning. India lost the match at 3-4. Indian women had a lead of 3-2 at half time. But Britain’s skipper Hollie Pearne Webb score the equaliser as soon as the second half started. Sarah Robertson scored a  goal with a magnificent reverse shot of the ball passed by Elena Rayer.  At one time India were 0-2. The Indian girls came back into the match from two goals down and took the lead in second quarter making the score 3-2. Gurjit Kaur socred twice from penalty corners to help India draw level. Vandana Katariya then gave India the third goal before half time. The brace from Gurjit Kaur went in vain as the Britain team went on winning by scoring two successive goals. Great Britain is the reigning champions as they were at the top in the Rio Olympics in 2016. Thus, Indian women’s hockey team fell short of their maiden Olympic medal. They finished fourth which in itself is commendable enough taking their performance so far in Olympics. Rani Rampal’s team of young women will be remembered by hockey fans in India for the way they performed to the best of their abilities.
