Withdraw move to hike power tariff: Shabbir Ali
HYDERABAD: Deputy Congress leader in Legislative Council Mohd Ali Shabbir has demanded that the Telangana Government withdraw the proposed hike in power tariff.
Addressing the media here on Wednesday, the Congress leader warned the State Government of a massive agitation if it failed to withdraw the power tariff proposals. He said the proposed hike would impose a burden of Rs 1088.88 crore on the common people.
Mr. Shabbir Ali recalled that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao had promised to reduce power tariff at the time of general elections. The Government was now contending that DISCOMs would be in deficit if the tariff was not hiked. Though the State had surplus budget at the time of its formation, the mishandling of State finances by the TRS Government pushed the Telangana into bankruptcy.
The Congress leader said the TRS Government was indulging in mud-slinging on Congress party and wrongly blaming its regime for the present energy crisis in Telangana. He said all the upcoming power projects were initiated during the Congress regime only. For instance, the 600 MW Bhupally, 2×600 MW SCCL Project at Mancherial or the 2×800 Krishnapatnam Power Project were started by the then Congress Government. Telangana would get about 1,000 MW of power from NTPC’s project.
All these projects would become functional in the next few months. However, the present TRS Government failed to take up even a single project in the last eight months of its governance. He said the Congress had laid a strong foundation to meet the energy needs of Telangana and asked the TRS Government to introspect before leveling allegations. (NSS)
