What’s your story?
She had a tough life. She grew with lot of care and affection but her marriage to a wrong man ruined her life. Her smiles were robbed off. Abuse, physical torture and tears was what her life remained as. She wanted to make her own identity and she became a successful gossip columnist. One night on her way to a party, dressed in the most stylish designer attire she saw her husband fallen drunk on the bus-stand. She stopped the car and asked the driver to take him home.
How would people gossip if that were known.
“I had a great life, loving children, caring parents, great friends yet I felt like a fraud, had a compulsion to write about this embarrassing incident though I knew I am risking my career, the future of my children writes Pooja Shah.
Pooja made false starts on her memoir three times in last 20 years, on each occasion she grew frustrated and fearful. Later she builds the courage to write the truth.
If one remembers the book Glass Castle, walls made false starts on her memoir. Only at the age of 44 she had the courage and wrote the truth. This book had sold more than two million copies and been translated into 23 languages.
Says Walls in her interviews one of the experience I have learnt from this memoir is how much we all have in common. Most of us think that certain incidents happen only in our life and somehow they make us less of a person. She urges people to write about their lives. It gives you new perspective.
One need not have a hard difficult scrabble childhood or youth to write a memoir. One’s life need not be dramatic or adventurous to write a memoir. Equally one need not write with an opinion to get it published.
If one reads the interview of the author of teacher Man, he says, you have had a miserable childhood, so you have something to write about .What are we goanna write about? All we do is we are born, ordinary middle class living, go to a convent school, fall in love, eulope, graduation or engineering, job, kids they go to school, get divorced or get a heart attack, retire, get obese……………so what is there to write?
It is a general feeling that most of us are born to die. We have an ordinary life. 99.95 % people believe they are living a boring monotonous life. They do not find or create a meaning to their life and existence.
What is Memoir all about? It is about handing over your life to someone and saying, this is what I went through, this is who I am and maybe there are some lessons or something common for you from my memoir. May be you can learn something from it. It is an honest sharing about what you think, feel and have suffered in life. May be somebody gets the benefit of your experience without living
Through the same circumstances.
Writing about your life is also about a clearer understanding about yourself. Stephen king said, “I write to find out what I think.
There are different types of memoir. one can write about their childhood or about their adventures in travelling. Some write about the individual who influenced their life like Lorna Kelly did it in the Camel knows the way, it’s all about Mother Theresa and the missionaries of charity. One can write about a crime or injustice mooted against an individual or a group. Girls of a tender age are about the murder of a classmate.
The challenge is to start to cough up the feelings, incidents in words. Some avoid as writing a memoir is like a confession to yourself. One has to examiner their conscience. You can’t write a successful memoir if you are worried about a friend or a family looking over your shoulder. If you are truly honest and revealing about yourself you are appreciated.
In your Memoir you speak the truth and honesty is not only a gift to other people, it is a gift to yourself.
