What is Mehbooba upto?
- Mufti meets Modi
- Blames Pak for violence
- Says handful are behind trouble
New Delhi: Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has met Prime Minister Narendra Modi here today. It was the first meeting between the two after violence erupted in Kashmir valley in the wake of Hizbul terrorist Burhan Wani’s death in an encounter with armed forces on 8 July 2016.
Mehbooba, talking to the media after the meeting, blamed Pakistan for creating trouble in the valley. She said only a handful of people are inciting violence. The first priority of her government is to bring about normalcy in the valley. In about 50 days of turmoil nearly 70 persons were killed and more than a thousand were injured.
Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited Srinagar twice after the unrest broke out.
Volt face by Mufti
There is evidently a sudden change in Mehbooba stance. Till the other day she was saying that the Indian security forces killed Burhan Wani, the Mujahideen commander. She later made a u-turn and said the security forces were not aware of Wani’s presence at the spot where the encounter took place. In contrast to what she said in a press conference on July 28 she called Wani a militant during the press conference she addressed along with HM on Thursday. She asked if the youngsters went to Army camps to buy toffees? She categorically said some miscreants are bent upon getting children killed and blinded so that people of the valley become emotional and take anti-establishment view.
Political parties in Kashmir are adept at fishing in troubled water and Opposition leader Omar Abdullah of National Conference is doing just the same at present. He is paying Mehbooba in the same coin. It may be recalled that during the violence that rocked the valley in 2010 following a fake encounter Mehbooba was visiting the houses of the youths killed in firing. More than 110 boys were killed in that phase. Omar was the chief minister at that time. He has now usurped the space of soft- separatism which was earlier occupied by Mehbooba.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reiterated that any solution to Kashmir issue has to be within the confines of the J&K constitution which makes it clear that Kashmir is an integral part of India.
As against this background, Mehbooba cannot any more humour the separatists who are backed by Pakistan. The bold stance taken by Modi visa-vis Pakistan placed limitations on the options before J&K CM.
