A photo journalist of Vijayawada brought the honour to the country by winning the prestigious awards at the global level.

Vijayawada: A photo journalist, Ch V S Vijayabhaskara Rao, senior special pohotographer of The Hindu working in Vijayawada, had won the prestigious award of The Humanity Photo Awards – 2017. The award would be presented on September 16, 2017 in China.

The contest was jointly conducted by The China Folklore Photographic Association (CFPA) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Vijayabhaskara Rao had portrayed the lives of the tribe Lambadas who are found mostly in the neighbouring Telangana State and parts of Andhra Pradesh.

The global contest had received 6,387 participants from 133 countries and registered 7,848 sets that were qualified initially. Later, 666 photographers made it to the second level and 500 of them from across the globe had been selected for the Performance Awards under various other categories.

Vijayabhaskara Rao had won several national and international awards in the last 10 years. Interestingly, Vijayawada, which was the hub of the media in earlier days, now is credited with over a dozen photo journalists who have won international awards.
