UoH Scholar Commits Suicide
Hyderabad: A PhD scholar, Vishal Tandon, belonging to the University of Hyderabad committed suicide on Saturday. An earlier suicide in the same university by Rohit Vemula, a dalit scholar, had hit the national headlines and continues to attract attention even today. Authorities that then inquired had stated that Rohith was actually a BC.
Vishal was pursuing PhD in the Centre for Women Studies and living near the university campus. He was stated to be depressed because his career had not picked up as he had expected. He jumped from the 14th floor of his apartment, Aparna Sarovar, on Saturday. Vishal’s demise is the ninth suicide by this university’s alumni in the past 11 years.
Chandanagar Inspector, N Tirupati Rao, said before committing suicide, Vishal had sent an email to his sister staying in Mumbai. He had expressed disappointment that his career was not going in the right direction and that he was had not succeeded in shaping it. His sister, sensing the mood of her brother, alerted a common friend. But, Vishal committed suicide by then, the Inspector said.
The scholar had already completed two-and-a-half years’ research on the topic “Muslim Masculinities in Crisis: A Queer Reading of Hindi Films”, as part of his PhD.
