Twin Blasts In Russian Metro Rail Kill 10 passengers

St Petersburg: Two explosions took place in an underground metro station here on Monday resulting in the death of ten persons. According to Russian State media reports, at least 50 persons, including children, were injured. The blasts occurred in a subway car at Sennaya Ploschad metro. Evacuation of passengers started soon after the blast. The door of a coach of the train was blown off, according to Reuters. Passengers were seen hammering at closed windows which were jammed because of the blast. The St Petersburg metro station has been closed by the authorities.

The blast was caused by a bomb packed with shrapnel. Acute security measures were taken at Moscow metro rail station in view of the twin blasts at St Petersburg. Unconfirmed reports said Chechnya rebels may be behind the blasts. Russian president Vladimir Putin was here for a meeting with Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko. Putin expressed shock at the ghastly incident.

St Petersburg is the second largest city in Russia after Moscow. Chechnya rebels have been targeting Russian cities for many years. In 2010 two women suicide bombers exploded themselves in Moscow metro rail station killing 38 persons.
