TS sets national record in tur dal procurement
- Harish wants Centre to review export-import policy
Hyderabad: Marketing and Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao has claimed that the Telangana Government has set a record at national level by procuring 7.5 lakh tons of tur dal through 90 purchase centers across the State and made a payment of Rs 220 cr.
At a review meeting on Tuesday, he asked the officials to procure all the produce to help them get rid of financial problems. The minister expressed concern that the farmers are not getting remunerative prices to their produce despite taking steps. He attributed it to the rise in the total cultivated area to 4.35 lakh hectares from 2.47 lakh hectares and also due to Centre’s decision on procuring tur dal and other produce in the open market. The government will take steps needed to help the farmers get better prices to their produce, Harish Rao reiterated.
Centre decision on export and import of this produce from Mozambique, Tanzania, Malavi, Myanmar and other nations has adverse impact on the farmers, he said. The problem is persistent as the Centre has signed an agreement to import one lakh tons of tur dal in 2016-17 and 2 lakh tons in three years added to the woes, he said.
The Centre should revive its policies in the larger interests of the farmers, Harish Rao said and objected to lifting of 30 per cent of duty for importing the farm produce. Harish said that he had already written a letter to Union Commerce Minister Nirmala Sitaraman in this regard. The minister also asked the Centre to simplify the export policy on tur and other dal items by removing the cap on the limits of stocks. –NSS
