TRS Will Support Me, Claims Meira Kumar
Hyderabad: Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, has asserted that the Opposition has its “own strategies” to obtain the support of the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi for her candidacy in the forthcoming elections for the President of India.
Without elaborating, the candidate being fielded by 17 opposition parties said she had written letters to both TRS and MIM seeking their support. She had tried to meet Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao, but could not do so.
Reminding that Telangana was formed when she was the Speaker of Lok Sabha, she described UPA’s decision under the leadership of Sonia Gandhi on formation of Telangana State as historic. She asserted that the then government took the decision to fulfil the aspirations of the Telangana people. “Under the circumstances, I request the Telangana legislators to support me,” she appealed.
Saying that she was not alone and had the support of many, she asserted that she was fighting for freedom of expression. “I’m in the Presidential race for the sake of ideologies and am confident about my victory. I request both TRS and MIM to support me.”
At a meeting held at Gandhi Bhavan, the State Headquarters of the Congress Party, the Opposition Presidential candidate greeted the people of Telangana and said the time has come to protect values, philosophy and ideologies of the country. Responding to many issues, she expressed concern that the election was being treated as Dalit vs Dalit.
Meira Kumar underlined that it is very dangerous if the government decides what people must eat, hinting at the attacks on Dalits and Muslims by cow vigilantes.
Telangana Congress President Uttam Kumar stated that Meira Kumar is the second key person after Sonia to play a crucial role in the formation of Telangana.
