TRS MLA Arrested For Behaving Indecently With Woman District Collector, Released

MLA Shankar Naik held the hand of District Collector as they were returning to the dais after the Haritha Haram programme in Mahabubabad. This is not the first time that the ruling party MLA has misbehaved with her.

Mahabubabad: Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi MLA, Banoth Shankar Naik, was arrested on Thursday for misbehaving with Mahabubabad District Collector, Dr Preethi Meena. He was released soon after.

According to District Superintendent of Police, Nandyal Kotireddy, Telangana Tourism Minister Azmeera Chandulal, TRS MP Sitaram Naik, Shankar Naik and the Collector had participated in the Haritha Haram tree plantation programme held in Mahabubabad on Wednesday. To mark the occasion, they all planted trees in the NTR Stadium at Mahabubabad.

The VIPs then proceeded to the dais when, to everyone’s shock, Shankar Naik held the hand of the Collector. Feeling humiliated, she complained to the State Chief Secretary SP Singh and the Telangana IAS Officers’ Association. The news soon reached Chief Minister K Chandrasekhara Rao.

Official sources said an angry Chief Minister immediately called Shankar Naik. He ordered the MLA to meet the Collector and apologise to her unconditionally. The CM also warned that if he does not mend his ways, he would be suspended from the party itself.

Chandrasekhara Rao then requested Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari, Chandulal and Sitaram Naik to speak to Preethi Meena and console her. The three went and met the Collector at her residence. The Deputy Chief Minister expressed concern and assured Preethi Meena that no such thing will happen in the future.

All that time, MLA Shankar Naik was waiting outside the Collector’s residence. After he was called inside, he apologised to her and came out. Speaking to the media, he stated that Preethi Meena is like his sister and he must have touched her by mistake.

As per the advice of her seniors, Preethi Meena filed a complaint against the TRS MLA on Thursday morning, leading to his arrest. Shankar Naik was forthwith released on bail after he gave a personal undertaking.

It has been reported that though she immediately informed the Tourism Minister about the behaviour, he did not bother to respond.

This is not the first time that the TRS MLA has misbehaved with the Collector. He had done so earlier too, but the Collector ignored him. When the MLA repeated his behaviour on Wednesday, she took up the issue straightaway with her senior officials.

Mahabubabad Police have registered a case against the MLA.
