Tension Gripped Vamsadhara-Project-Affected Villages In Srikakulam

Vamsadhara phase-2 project oustees have been fighting for rehabilitation and resettlement package under 2013 Land Acquisition Act, but government says it paid the compensations.

Srikakulam: Tension gripped the Vamsadhara phase-2 project affected villages in Hiramandalam in the district, following arrests of scores of protesters on Thursday.

The agitators were demanding a better rehabilitation and resettlement package for the project oustees in accordance with the Land Acquisition Act-2013.

Overseen by revenue officials and under the tight security of district police, the project contractors started excavation works on the road connecting several villages including Garlapadu, Chinnikollivalasa and eleven tribal hamlets. Despite protests from the locals for the past several months, the state government was firm on taking up the project works in the mandal.

Several hundreds of villagers who rushed to the site on hearing the news that works were commenced staged a protest and shouted slogans pressing for their demands. An altercation ensued between the agitators and the police. The irate agitators questioned the revenue and police officials how the government could go ahead with project works without resolving their issues.

The police pulled several protesters in, including Garlapadu sarpanch N Aruna. who tried to have a dialogue with police officials. Later, they were shifted to Amudalavalasa and Patapatnam police stations. It is learnt that police booked cases on forty-eight people for unlawfully assembling at the site.
