Telugu States and film industry pay rich tributes, recall links with Jaya

Hyderabad/Vijayawada: The two Telugu states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh which have innumerable Jayalalithaa’s fans mourned her demise in Chennai on Monday night. Though she stopped acting in films long ago, her co-actors, producers, directors and technicians in the Hyderabad-based Telugu film industry expressed their grief and shared their association with her in interviews given to several Telugu TV channels throughout Tuesday. Condolences poured in from both the Telugu Chief Ministers, their cabinet colleagues, the Governor of AP and Telangana State, political parties and the film fraternity.

Governor’s condolences

ESL NarasimhanTelangana and Andhra Pradesh States Governor ESL Narasimhan expressed his grief over the demise of Jayalalithaa and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Tamil Nadu State.

 In his condolence message, the Governor said: “I was deeply saddened to learn of the demise of Selvi Jayalalithaa and  I convey my profound grief and heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Tamil Nadu. She was a great visionary and an able administrator and distinguished herself in multifarious fields. She was loved and admired by millions in the State and her death has indeed created a void in the nation and particularly Tamil Nadu. My heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Tamil Nadu. May her soul rest in peace”.)

TN lost a great leader: KCR

KCRTelangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, in a statement, stated her followers and admirers regarded her as “Puracchhi Thalaivi” (revolutionary leader) in Tamil Nadu politics. In her passing away, Tamil Nadu has lost a great leader. He described Jayalalithaa as political heir of the late M G Ramachandran. At a time when women entering politics was rare, Jayalalithaa created a political history in the contemporary Tamil Nadu politics by becoming AIADMK’s general secretary and later on as Chief Minister of that State.

KCR described Jayalalithaa as a unique person in TN politics to have won State Legislative Assembly elections consecutively for two terms and formed the government and set a record of sorts. She had also excelled as a film artiste and proved herself in the arena of politics too, which is a record. Her demise created a void in political scenario of Tamil Nadu. He expressed his heartfelt sympathies and conveyed his condolences to the members of the bereaved family and people of Tamil Nadu. He sent his cabinet colleagues Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao and Home Minister Nayani Narasimha Reddy to Chennai to represent the Telangana State at Jayalalithaa’s funeral that was held on Tuesday evening.

They visited Rajaji Hall and placed wreaths at the coffin of Jayalalithaa.

AP Government mourns Jayalalithaa

Chandrababu NaiduThe Andhra Pradesh Government observed a two-minute silence at 12 noon and paid rich tributes to her. Expressing grief, Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said in Vijayawada: “In deep anguish over the demise of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, a long-time friend and a leader with an indomitable spirit, who was loved by all, I convey my deepest condolences to her party leaders and people of Tamil Nadu. She will remain in our memories as the leader, who truly cared for poor people.”

Dattatreya pays tributes

Bandaru DattatreyaUnion Minister of State for Labour & Employment Bandaru Dattatraya expressed his shock and grief on the demise of Jayalalithaa. In a statement issued in Hyderabad, Dattatreya hailed Jayalalithaa as an able administrator, who was known for her determination and social-benefit programmes. He stated Jayalalithaa always relentlessly worked for welfare of women and it was the Tamil Nadu government that increased delivery leave for women to 26 days.

Tollywood dazed

The Telugu film industry Tollywood expressed shock and grief on the passing away of actor-turned mass leader Jayalalithaa.  Jayalalithaa was no stranger for Telugus. With her superb performance in Telugu movies as a heroine alongside big stars like N T Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, G. Krishna, Shobhan Babu among others, Jayalalithaa was equally a Telugu star as in Tamil. She acted in 12 movies with NTR out of 29 Telugu movies in which she was a heroine. Besides, Jayalalithaa had close links with Hyderabad as she owned a farm house on the city outskirts and a few other properties.

JamunaVeteran actress of yesteryear Jamuna, who co-starred with Jayalalithaa in Srikrishna Vijayam in Telugu, expressed her deep sorrow over Jayalalithaa’s death. Recollecting her association with Jayalalithaa, Jamuna said: “Jayalalithaa was a wonderful human-being. Whenever we met, she would behave like an innocent child and at the same time showered all love and affection, especially on senior artistes.”

Murali MohanTDP MP and veteran actor Murali Mohan said as Chief Minister Jayalalithaa relentlessly worked for welfare of the have-nots of Tamil Nadu and successfully implemented various programmes for them like Amma canteens, Amma Uppu, Amma Vaidyam and so on like a mother cares for her children. Recalling her stint in Tollywood, Murali Mohan sadly reminded a song in ANR-Jayalalithaa starrer Adrustavanthulu:

‘Ayyayyo Brahmaiah,

Anyayam Cheshavemayya –

Appude Jayalalithanu Theesukupoyavemayya’.

He paid rich tributes to her personally and on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh government.

There are supporters of AIADMK and fans of Jayalalithaa in Secunderabad, who burst in tears on learning of her demise. Small pockets of the party’s supporters exist in many areas of Secunderabad, notably in Trimulgherry and Bollarum. Jayalalithaa’s hospitalisation in September plunged them into gloom and they prayed for her recovery.

“The Tamil people and the AIADMK have lost a great leader. It is a sad day for us,” said Sunder Krishnan, a resident of Bollarum. Krishnan, a former AIADMK party worker, said social gatherings of the Tamil community in Bollarum have been sombre ever since reports of her ill-health had trickled in earlier this year. Some supporters from the city flew to Chennai to pay last tributes to their leader.

Irreparable loss to the country: CPI

Chada Venkat ReddyCPI Telangana State unit secretary Chada Venkat Reddy, in a press note said:  “Jayalalithaa introduced many welfare schemes for the poor people and won their hearts and became Amma who struggled hard for the cause of the poor. She shifted to politics from lucrative film field and rose to become a national level leader. Jayalalitha has fans and sympathizers in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh and other States besides Tamil Nadu. Her death is irreparable loss to the nation.”

A rare phenomenon: Ex-Governor Rammohan Rao

Rammohan RaoPS Rammohan Rao, former Governor of Tamil Nadu, said, “My wife and I convey our profound grief and heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Tamil Nadu as also the dear and near ones of Selvi Jayalalithaa on her untimely demise. Jayalalitha was a rare phenomenon in the political history of India, who rose to dizzy heights of leadership against formidable odds. She distinguished herself in whatever she did, be it in academics, films and politics. A woman, a loner, an immaculate articulator, and a political outsider she displayed tremendous self-belief, supreme self confidence, a sharp mind and a steely resolve to overcome all odds to provide firm and decisive leadership to the AIADMK and the State of Tamil Nadu for nearly three decades. An uncompromising champion of the interests and rights of Tamil Nadu, she would be forever remembered for her deep empathy for women and perceptive benevolence for the under privileged.” -NSS
