Telugu Poet C Narayana Reddy No More
Hyderabad: Famous Telugu poet, teacher and scholar and Jnanapith Awardee Dr C Narayana Reddy (85) passed away on Monday morning.
Born at Hanumajipeta in Karimnagar district, Cinaree, as Dr Narayana Reddy was called, breathed his last at Care Hospitals here after a prolonged illness. He taught Telugu literature at Osmania University for many years. He wrote thousands of lyrics for films. He brought the literary respect to cinema lyrics. Many of his songs are very popular and they are always on the lips of Telugu people. He can be described as a legend whose contribution to Telugu literature is enormous. His song,”Telugu Jaati Manadi, Ninduga Velugu Jaati Manadi’ was filmed on the matinee idol NT Rama Rao and it was used as a motivational song by NTR after he launched Telugu Desam Party in 1982.
Cinaree’s first published work was Navami puvvu in 1953. He started writing for movies in 1962 with Guleebakaavali Katha, featuring NTR and Jamuna, was his first movies for which he wrote lyrics. He penned thousands of songs for films. He received Padma Shri in 1977, Kalaprapoorna in 1978 and Jnanapith Award in 1988. He was awarded Padmabhushan in 1992. He was made Rajya Sabha Member in 1997. He was bestowed Lifetime Achievement Award by Sakshi Nedia Group in 2015. He is good at Urdu and English. He was chairman of Telugu Academy, Official Language Commission besides being Vice Chancellor of Telugu University. He has four daughters. His wife passed away many years back. He instituted an award in her name.
