Tearful farewell to Devineni Nehru
Amaravati: Thousands of supporters and loyalists, besides dozens of leaders, bid a tearful farewell to former minister Devineni Rajasekhar Nehru here on Tuesday. Rajasekhar Nehru died of cardiac arrest in Hyderabad the previous day.
Chief Minister Naidu, his cabinet colleagues and dozens of leaders from all political parties paid their last respects to the departed leader. Thousands of supporters joined the funeral held in his farm at Gunadala. His son, Devineni Avinash, performed the last rites conducted with the State honours.
The body was kept at his home in Gunadala from Monday evening for his supporters to pay their last respects to the leader. Nehru’s supporters from across the Krishna and Guntur districts and parts of other districts kept on visiting his body all through the night.
A known committed leader to his supporters, Nehru stood for his word till his last minute and enjoyed greater support of the people. As general secretary of the party Krishna district unit in the early 1990s, he kept the party folks together in the district. Whether in power or not, his word carried weight all through and he commanded respect in the administration.
He stood strong when his first rank supporters, Chalasani Venkateswara Rao alias Pandu and Devineni Venkata Ramana, left him to stay with the TDP, after the 1995 coup. With Kadiyala Butchi Babu with him always, and with the support of the second rank leaders including his brother Devineni Baji Prasad, Nehru kept his folks intact all through, including when he joined the ruling TDP.
