Sushil Kumar recommended for Padma Bhushan
New Delhi: Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has once again recommended two-time Olympic medallist wrestler Sushi Kumar’s name for the prestigious Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour.
Sushil Kumar’s name was recommended two-years ago, but was not considered.
Sushil is the only Indian athlete to have won two individual Olympic medals — a bronze in the 2008 Beijing Games and a silver in the 2012 London Games. Already bestowed with the Khel Ratna award — the country’s highest sporting honour — Sushil is also a two-time Commonwealth Games gold-medalist and four-time Commonwealth champion.
This news has come as a surprise, in the light of the wrestler’s recent feud with wrestling body regarding the Olympic berth.
WFI has also recommended the names of Sushil’s coach and Dronacharya awardee Yashvir Singh and female wrestler AlkaTomar for Padma Shri.
15-time World billiards and snooker champion Pankaj Advani is also among the recommended list of sports persons for Padma Bhushan.
