Suresh Raina back in ODI against New Zealand
Mumbai: Suresh Raina staged a comeback for the first three one day international series against New Zealand on Thursday. A 15-member squad was announced by the new BCCI selection committee headed by MRK Prasad, in Mumbai.
First match of the ODI series will be played in Dharmasala on October 16.
Prasad, however, made it clear that Raina’s inclusion is a short term move, primarily keeping in mind his ability to bowl tight off-breaks in sub-continental conditions.
Three senior players Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami were rested to keep them fresh for long home season ahead.
Suresh Raina last played against South Africa in Mumbai in October 2015. Due to inconsistent performance and lack of form forced the selection committee to drop him from ODIs.
Raina has played 223 ODIs, scoring 5568 runs including five centuries and 36 fifties. As a part time off-spinner he took 36 wickets.
Openers KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and pace bowler Bhuvaneswar Kumar were not considered for selection due to injuries.
ODI Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (Captain), Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Manish Pandey, Suresh Raina, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Jasprit Bumrah, Dhawal Kulkarni, Umesh Yadav, Mandeep Singh, Kedar Jadhav
