State EC issues notification for by-election to fill 37 vacancies in local bodies
Amaravati: The State Election Commission had issued notification to fill 37 vacancies in the local bodies across the State. State Election Commissioner N Ramesh Kumar said that elections would be held on April 9 to fill these vacancies spread over two municipal corporations and 25 municipalities and nagara panchayats in the State.
Elections to three divisions in Chittoor Municipal Corporation and one division in Vijayawada Municipal Corporation would, besides the vacancies in Parvathipuram, Yalamanchili, Ramchandrapuram, Amalapuram, Kovvur, Tanuku, Gudivada, Pedana, Mangalagiri, Bapatla, Tenali, Macherla, Sattenapalli, Kavali, Sullurpet, Nagari, Palamaneru, Rayachoti, Jammalamadugu, Badvel, Rayadurg and Tadipatri municipalities, Atmakuru and Pamidi nagara panchats are slated for April 9.
The Returning officers would start receiving nominations from March 20 to 23 and take up the nominations for scrutiny on March 24. The last day for withdrawals is March 27 and elections on April 9. Counting of votes would be held on April 11, the EC said in the notification.
The EC also announced that the model code of conduct had come into force from March 16 and would be in force till April 11. The code would be observed in all the municipal corporations and the municipalities where elections are scheduled to be held, the EC added.
However, elections to the five Municipal Corporations of Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada, Guntur, Ongole, Tirupathi and Kurnool, five municipalities of Rajam, Nellimarla, Anaparthi, Kandukuru and Rajampet are yet to be conducted. In addition to these there are vacancies in zilla parishads, mandal parishads and gram panchayats. The EC had to fill the vacancies of 7 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), 129 Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies (MPTCs) and 156 sarpanches in different districts in the State.
