Stampede at Varanasi: Death toll rises to 24
Varanasi: 24 people have been killed in the stampede that took place at the Rajghat Bridge between Varanasi and Chandauli districts. Around 60 people were injured and five of them are said to be in serious condition. Senior police officials and administrative officers rushed to the spot and initiated rescue operations.
This incident took place on Saturday afternoon when thousands of followers of Jai Gurudev were on their way to Domri village to participate in a two -day camp. Though the permission was there for only 3,000 people, around one lakh people took part in the procession. People from different places gathered to participate in the procession and the entire route witnessed a massive traffic jam.
Akhilesh Yadav, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, announced Rs 2 lakhs each for families of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for those injured in the stampede.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted that he is “deeply saddened by the loss of lives in the stampede in Varanasi. Condolences to the bereaved families. Prayers with those injured.” He also announced ex-gratia of Rs. 2 lakhs for the families of those killed and Rs. 50,000 for those wounded in the stampede.
