Stalemate In TN May Continue
Chennai: Stalemate may continue in Tamil Nadu despite Sasikala Natarajan’s pressure tactics aimed at clinching the Issue before the apex court delivers its judgment in disproportionate assets case. The Centre is apparently opposed to allow Sasikala to become CM. It remains to be seen if O Panneerselvam can muster enough support to beat Sasikala in the game of realpolitik.
O Panneerselvam has been getting calls congratulating him for standing up to Sasikala Natarajan. Film personalities like Kamal Hassan, Gautami, Kushbu and Jayalalithaa’s niece Deepa.
People of Tamil Nadu have been opposing the rise of Sasikala. Ordinary AIADMK party workers have occupied the party offices in the districts shouting slogans against Sasikala and in favour of Panneerselvam. There is popular anger against Sasikala for creating uncertainty in the government.
Kamal Hassan has appealed to the film fraternity to speak out their mind and demonstrate their support to OPS. He referred to the Jallikattu movement which was a result of decades of discontent and frustration.
Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao is likely to visit Chennai on Thursday. But he is not likely to administer oath of office to Sasikala. He might prefer to wait till Monday when the Supreme Court is expected to give the judgment on disproportionate assets case. The apex court had reserved the judgment eight months ago. If Sasikala gets convicted by the SC the question of her being sworn in as chief minister does not arise. If the court confirms the verdict of the Karnataka High Court, Sasikala will be free to become chief minister if she keeps the MLAs with her till then.
The Election Commission has played its part in the Tamil drama. It said Sasikala is not qualified to be party general secretary since the party constitution stipulates that a person is eligible to become general secretary only if he or she has been a member of the party for not less than five years. She does not fulfil this rule.
Constitutional experts say the governor can wait till the judgment in the assets case is out. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is understood to be in favour of continuing with OPS. Governor Rao who accepted the resignation submitted by OPS cannot do anything about it. The governor had asked OPS to continue to function as chief minister till alternate arrangements are made. In his capacity as a lame duck CM, he has ordered a probe into the death of J Jayalalithaa by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court. People of Tamil Nadu are waiting for the next development with their fingers crossed.
