Srinivas Kuchibhotla’s Killer Indicted For Hate Crime
Washington: Finally the United States judiciary has decided to act on hate crimes and indicted Adam Purinton the man accused of killing Indian techie Srinivas Kuchibhata at a suburban Kansas City bar. Two others were also injured in the firing.
A federal grand jury on Friday indicted Purinton, 51, of Olathe, Kansas for hate crime and firearms charges after a shooting at a city bar on February 22.
The indictment announced by the Department of Justice has accused Purinton of shooting and killing Kuchibhotla and attempting to kill Alok Madasani, also an Indian national, because of their actual and perceived race, colour, religion and national origin. Ian Grillot, a 24-year-old American man was also injured while intervening in the shooting.
The announcement in this regard was made by the Acting Assistant Attorney General Thomas E Wheeler, II, head of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division, and the United States Attorney Thomas E Beall of the District of Kansas.
Purinton faces a maximum penalty of death or life in prison. A media release said that the Justice Department will decide whether to seek the death penalty in this case a few days later.
It was alleged that Purinton committed the offences after substantial planning and premeditation, and was indicted for violating federal firearms statute by firing at Kuchibhotla, Madasani and Grillot during the attack.
A US Navy veteran, Purinton is currently being held in Johnson County Jail.
