Srikant Wins Australian Open Badminton Championship, Makes Telugus Proud

Melbourne: Kidambi Srikant, Indian shuttles from Guntur, has made history by beating the world champion Chen Lang to win Australian Open Badminton championship. Srikant has beaten Chen Lang in straight sets with 22-20, 22-16 on Sunday.

It was the fifth clash between Srikant and Chen Lang of which the earlier three matches were clinched by the world champion.

Srikant’ father gave full credit to Pullela Gopichand who trained the youngster.

The first game was very competitive with score hovering around 14-14, then 15-15 and then 20-20.  Srikant raised his game and pipped the post by scoring the last two points. In the second game,  Srikant has been having upper hand all through. With this win, Srikant bagged two super series in a row. Earlier he won Indonesia super series while he ended up as runner in Singapore super series.

There were celebration at Chandramouli Nagar in Guntur city on knowing about the victory of Srikant. His parents live at Chandramouli Nagar. He started training at NTR Sports Complex in Brindavan Gardens in Guntur. Then he moved  to Hyderabad to join Gopichand Academy. In 2012 he won his first international title at Maldives.
