Speeding Truck kills 20 People
Tirupati: A speeding truck caused a major accident on Friday afternoon at Yerpedu in Chittoor district. The truck carrying a heavy load had lost balance and rammed into the shops. While 20 people died in the incident, 15 were grievously injured.
The truck first hit an electric pole before ramming into the shops. Some of those killed were electrocuted, said the local police. Six of the dead were crushed by the truck. Those injured were sent to Ruia Hospital, Tirupati.
A good number of farmers were believed to have gathered at the scene to protest against an alleged sand mafia, operating in the region. With the speeding truck coming suddenly at them, people went helter-skelter to save their lives. However, those who couldn’t rush were crushed by the truck.
The district SP and other officials reached the spot immediately. The driver and cleaner escaped from the spot. There were reports that the truck driver was drunk. Renigunta DSP Nanjundappa confirmed that 20 people lost lives in the incident.
Hearing the news, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted – “Pained by the loss of lives due to an accident in AP’s Chittoor district. Condolences to families of the deceased and prayers with the injured,” Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chinna Rajappa spoke to the officials and directed them to ensure necessary treatment was given to the injured.
Meanwhile, the AP Cabinet decided to give Rs. 5 lakhs as compensation to the victims.
