SP, Congress Seal Alliance
New Delhi/Lucknow: Samajwadi Party and the Congress Party have sealed an alliance with the Congress getting 105 seats to fight. The Samajwadi Party (SP) would contest the remaining 298 seats. This was announced in Lucknow at a joint media conference addressed by Raj Babbar, UPPCC president and Naresh Uttam Patel, President of UP unit of the SP on Sunday.
A phone call from Congress President Sonia Gandhi to Akhilesh Yadav did the trick. Akhilesh is understood to have met Priyanka Gandhi, Sonia’s daughter and Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi’s sister, before he revolted against his father and got an assurance from her that she would campaign all over Uttar Pradesh for the alliance. Dimple, wife of UP chief minister, also had a meeting with Priyanka. A Tweet from Ahmad Patel, Political Secretary to Sonia Gandhi, has made it clear that Priyanka was the chief negotiator as far as the UP elections are concerned.
Reports saying that Akhilesh did not meet Priyanka’s emissary and that the negotiations were down to the wire were apparently planted by the adversaries of Akhilesh. Priyanka spoke to Akhilesh and Dimple at 11.30 pm and joked about the media reports, a senior Congressman who was involved in negotiations, said. Rahul’ former aid Kanishka Singh has been helping Priyanka in her back office work. Dimple also had gained in confidence and has been sharing the dais with her husband more often now. The cadres of the Congress in the UP has been demanding Priyanka’s entry into politics. She is likely to campaign beyond Amethi and Rae Bareli to enthuse the party workers.
