Solar power-based storage system holds out new promise for farmers

Hyderabad: Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy will inaugurate ‘Ecofrost’, a solar power-based storage system, at Centre of Excellence for Vegetables and Flowers in Jeedimetla, Hyderabad on February 11 at 9 am. The system’s technology is such that it can change the post-harvest management

The minister will also interact with the poly house farmers and will inspect the development works done at the center. Presently, strawberry, cucumber, tomatoes, seedless brinjal and gerbera and carnation flowers are cultivated. The center has also started cultivating orchids based on tissue culture. The nearby district farmers have started buying vegetable seedlings at the rate of 25 paise each.

The hi-tech nursery and climate-controlled greenhouse is fetching about 6 lakh qualitative seedlings at a stretch. The COE has become a hub for R&D of new and advanced cultivation methods for horticulture crops. The open space at the center is also utilized for cultivation of loose flowers like scented roses. The centre’s produce is sold to supermarkets and also in open market to generate revenue for self sustainability. –NSS
