Shivadhar Reddy’s shift creates buzz

(Primepost Bureau)

Hyderabad: Police and political circles were surprised by the sudden transfer of Telangana Intelligence Chief B Shivadhar Reddy. It has sparked off animated discussion and endless speculation. A person who was believed to be very close to the chief minister, Reddy played a crucial role as eyes and ears of Telangana Chief Minister Kalvakuntla Chandrasekhara Rao (KCR) in the important first two years after the formation of the new State. Shivadhar, a mild-mannered but tough cop, earned laurels from Union Home Ministry for the efficient way in which he handled the misguided youth who were attracted to the terrorist organisation ISIS. He was instrumental in putting Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu in a tight spot by fixing TDP MLA Revant Reddy in ‘Note for Vote’ case. The sting operation had shocked the AP established end. Shivadhar was also known to be involved in the encounter of mafia don Nayeemuddin.

Police officers like HJ Dora and K Arvind Rao who worked in close proximities to their chief ministers as intelligence chiefs were elevated to the ultimate position of DGP. But Shivdhar was transferred from a highly focused position of intelligence chief to a remote position of IGP (personnel).

Some officers who don’t want to be named said Shivadhar Reddy made a request some four months ago for a transfer to a position with lesser responsibilities.

Sources in police department said Shivadhar did not perform certain tasks entrusted by the CM and he paid the penalty.

Post-Nayeem encounter, the CM had received complaints against Shivadhar Reddy from disgruntled officers who were envious of the growing clout of the cop. The fact that intelligence officials from Delhi have been contacting Shivadhar directly for crucial information also must have gone against him. CM was reportedly upset that he had no inkling of Mangalagiri MLA Alla Ramakrishna Reddy going to Mumbai forensic  laboratory and moving the ACB court with the help of a report from the lab which confirmed the voice of AP Chief Minister Naidu on the controversial tape. Whatever may be the motive behind the shift, the top cop has got the much deserved respite from a heavy and strenuous job.

IGP Naveen Chand who succeeded Shivadhar is a close relative of Captain Laxmikant Rao, a Rajya Sabha Member and a close chum of CM. It is certainly an elevation to Naveen Chand. He was appointed Cyberabad-West Commissioner only three months ago. Navin Chand took charge as Intelligence Chief on Friday.

CM KCR is known for his snap decisions. Deputy Chief Minister T Rajaiah was sacked in January 2015 and IAS officer Somesh Kumar also was transferred from the position if GHMC Commissioner in October of the same year. He takes and implements decisions taken out if gut feeling without much of consultations or deliberations.
