After giving us heart stirring films like Cheeni Kum and Paa, director R. Balki is back with yet another endearing film with an unlikely combination of Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush. Though Balki and his team did their best to keep the story under wraps, there were multiple rumours in the market about Shamitabh’s plot. Being a Dhanush fan, I was eager to see how he pulls off a role that was first offered to Shah Rukh Khan. Balki and Big B have earlier provided some unique, interesting stories to the audience. Perhaps that’s why the expectations from ‘Shamitabh’ are huge. Dhanush is hoping to repeat his ‘Raanjhana’ success one more time with this film.

This movie revolves around two individuals –Amitabh Sinha and Danish (Dhanush). The latter is a film fan who desperately wants to become a film star. He goes to Bombay to pursue his ambition but he neither has the right looks nor a voice. Luck comes smiling in the form of Amitabh, a drunkard who has a heavy voice and agrees to lend it to Danish.

They come together at the instance of the director Akshara Haasan and become a brand called Shamitabh, a combination of Danish and Amitabh. Although they join hands for a purpose, they drift apart due to their egos.

The movie is also about the dark side of film industry that exposes the jealousy  between actors and their greed for stardom. Now we are not saying it contains real life stories, but a side of the film industry that not many outside may be aware of.

Dhanush delivers an outstanding performance in this film whilst Amitabh Bachchan compliments the storyline with gravitas and soul by bringing home the emotions that run wild during times of insecurity. It is a delight to watch Dhanush and Amitabh Bachchan sharing the screen together.

Shamitabh is a film with great acting and ideas, a unique storyline and, above all, a smooth flow in its narration. Making it worth a watch are its two dynamics leads, Amitabh Bachchan and Dhanush, whose on-screen rivalry lights up the film. It is yet another from Balki.
