Shaadi Mubarak helpline launched

Hyderabad, November 11: Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mohammed Ali has started a helpline for ‘Shaadi Mubarak’ – a minority welfare scheme whereby financial assistance of Rs. 51,000 is given to poor Muslim girls on their marriage. Telangana girls above 18 years who are eligible for the scheme can call 040 – 246760452, one month before the marriage to apply for the assistance. Mohammed Ali said on the occasion that the helpline would be available between 10 and and 5pm. He also appealed to the people to put online applications and avoid mediators for the scheme.

Last week, Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) accused the TRS government of not being serious about the implementation of the ‘shaadi mubarak’ scheme. TPCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah and vice-president Mohd. Ali Shabbir said that the helpline and website created by the State government for the purpose were not fully operational. According to the government guidelines issued in September, the scheme was supposed to be implemented by October2. The TPCC leaders also said that they would organise a minorities’ convention at Hyderabad on November 23 to discuss the problems of the community, promises made by the TRS government and alliance with other parties, including Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM), for the forthcoming GHMC elections.
