Serena Williams upset by Karolina in US Open Semifinal
NEW YORK: Serena Williams lost to a big-hitting Karolina Pliskovain US Open semifinals on Thursday in New York. She’ll thus have to wait to become the first player in the Open era to win 23 majors — Williams is currently tied with Steffi Graf on 22.
And in a double blow, when the new rankings are released Monday, the 34-year-old will lose top spot to Angelique Kerber, ending Williams’ record-tying — with Graf — 186th straight week at No. 1.
Pliskova had never played beyond the third round of a grand slam, delivering the upset as she swept Williams off in one hour, 26 minutes.
Undone by a half-dozen double-faults, including on match point, and plenty of other mistakes she blamed in part on dealing with an injured left knee, Williams was upset 6-2, 7-6 (5) by big-serving Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic. The 10th-seeded Pliskova, who will play No. 2 Angelique Kerber of Germany for the title on Saturday.
