Sasikala Becomes Ordinary Prisoner; All Privileges Withdrawn

The argument AIADMK (Amma) General Secretary had with DIG Roopa over privileges has proved counterproductive. As a result, all facilities that Sasikala was enjoying have come crashing down.

Bengaluru: All special privileges granted to ruling AIADMK (Amma) General Secretary, VK Sasikala, inside the Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, Bengaluru, have been withdrawn with immediate effect.

Her personal wardrobe has been taken away and she is now dressed as an ordinary prisoner. From the five separate rooms kept at her disposal, the VIP prisoner has been moved to an ordinary prison cell.  She is having to consume regimented food made available to all prisoners.

The transformation has come about following an uproar, not just in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu but all over the country, that jailed Sasikala has been enjoying special privileges in the central prison in exchange of Rs. 2 crore bribe that she had allegedly paid to Director General of Prisons Satyanarayana Rao and his prison staff. The allegations were part of a sensational report by Prisons DIG Roopa, who has since been transferred to the Traffic Department.

The Karnataka Government led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah acted with alacrity and put a stop to all the special facilities being provided to AIADMK (Amma) faction leader.   More: Sasikala Getting Special Privileges In Jail, Karnataka CM Orders Probe

DIG Roopa’s report had recounted that Sasikala’s privileges included a special kitchen, meeting room, special room for watching TV, a spare room and separate bathroom facility, apart from an expensive cot, bed, sofa, refrigerator, washing machine, kitchenware and a long veranda for walking.

Five women prisoners were assigned to Sasikala for cooking and other services. Likewise, a special doctor was appointed exclusively for Sasikala. She was even allowed visitors including TTV Dinakaran, her nephew and Deputy General Secretary of the ruling Amma faction, who kept her posted about the ongoing political developments in Tamil Nadu and elsewhere. Sasikala’s visitors were also provided coffee, tea and snacks during their visit.

After DGP Satyanarayana Rao condemned reports that he and his staff were providing special privileges in exchange of monetary gains, social media has come alive with videos of facilities provided to the AIADMK General Secretary. The videos corroborated Roopa’s charges and in one of them, Sasikala is seen walking draped in an expensive-looking night suite and holding a bag.

It may be recalled that in February 2017, Sasikala was jailed for four years by the Supreme Court in the disproportionate income case in which late J Jayalalithaa was also an accused. The case against the late Chief Minister was dropped following her demise.

In an interesting aside, DIG Roopa was quite shocked during her inspection on seeing all the privileges being extended to Sasiskala. When she started shooting videos of everything using her cell phone, Sasikala got angry and entered into an argument with the DIG. The VIP prisoner even threatened Roopa, declaring that she knows everyone including the Karnataka CM and would get her transferred, according to prison sources.

There are reports that the Karnataka Home Department has proposed to the government to shift Sasikala from Bangalore to Tumkur Jail.

Meanwhile, a PIL has been filed with the High Court bench in Madurai against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister EK Palanisamy and Ministers D Srinivas, Sengottayan, Selluru Raju and Kamaraj. The petitioner, Sri Villiputtur, son of former MLA Tamarakanni, has sought their dismissal as they had violated the principles of their oath taking.  The court will decide on August 1 if the petition is worth hearing.  More: No Nonsense Karnataka Jails DIG Transferred
