Sania Mirza on top for second year
Singapore: Numero uno status enjoyed by India’s tennis star Sania Mirza during 2014-15 continued for the second year. She was declared number one player in the world in women’s doubles for 2015-16 despite her losing the semi-finals match in WTA Singapore Final in partnership with Martina Hingis. They lost to Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in semi-finals.
Makarova and Vesnina went on to beat Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova to claim the trophy thus denying Mattek-Sands the number one position in world women’s tennis doubles. By doing so, they helped the Hyderabadi star retain the top slot. “I am very happy. It is an amazing honour to be a number one for the second year. It has been an amazing journey for me”, an excited Sania said.
Sania has been on the top for 80th consecutive week. There have been only three legends in the world women’s double game — Navratilova, Black and Huber—
who had a long stint at the top in the history of world women’s doubles tennis. “It makes it even more satisfying for me”, said the pride of Hyderabad. Sania won titles throughout the year. She won Australian Open with Hingis and then she paired with Barbora Strycova to clinch Cincinnati Masters title. Now Sania and Hingis came together to defend WTA Finals Singapore title in vain.
