New Delhi, January 18: A proposal to declare Kiran Bedi, super cop who joined the BJP last week, the chief ministerial candidate is understood to have been accepted by the RSS chief Mohan Bhagavat . The move to induct former IPS officer and India Against Corruption activist Kiran Bedi into the BJP was not whole-heartedly welcomed by the RSS leadership in the beginning. When senior leaders of the party met Mohan Bhagavat, who is in Delhi, explained the compulsions that forced the decision the proposal has been approved.

The decision to welcome Kiran Bedi into the BJP was not opposed by the RSS. But the indecent hurry with which some of the BJP leaders were declaring Bedi as chief ministerial candidate was not to the liking of the Sangh leadership. There were also some doubts expressed by quarters in the BJP on Bedi’s resourcefulness in dealing with Sangh leadership and the leaders of the extended parivar such as Bajaran Dal and Viswa Hindu Parishad. Known as a no-nonsense leader, Bedi is a person who believes in mincing no words while giving her piece of mind. She is given to straight talk and is considered to be rigid in her views.

Taking the present situation in Delhi into account and the fact that the BJP very badly needs an attractive face to shore up its fortunes in the coming elections, the RSS leadership has reconsidered its stand and has given approval to the line decided upon by the triumvirate of the BJP-Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and Arun Jaitley. With the help of the cadres of the BJP and the charishma of Kiran Bedi and the forces opposed to Aam Admi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal, the BJP hopes to achieve its Mission 50 plus in the 70-member Delhi Assembly.

The BJP leadership has also realized that the dissidence in the Delhi unit has to be nipped in the bud. There were some leaders who were not very happy at Bedi being welcomed and offered the prime position. There were murmurs at the importance given to a rank outsider who was rabidly critical of Narendra Modi and the BJP until recently. Of late, Bedi had a transformation of heart and has been praising Prime Minister Modi as the right person at the right time to lead the country which in dire need of strong leaderhip. The BJP leadership is confident of establishing order in the party which claims to be a party with a difference that is known for its discipline. The leadership has decided to put a unified command in place to supervise the election effort of the BJP in coming weeks.

The polling for the Delhi Assembly elections is slated to take place on February 7 and the counting of votes would take place on February 10.
