Reliance Jio boosts VoLTE devices demand
NEW DELHI: After the launch of Reliance Jio 4G services, consumer demand for Voice over Long Term Evolution (VoLTE) enabled devices has almost doubled. The demand is more in price sensitive rural areas as VoLTE technology with free voice calls.
Reliance uses the same band for data and voice, with voice being another service offered over the LTE network. There is more demand in Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities as compared to Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities. Searchers for VoLTE devices have also grown in the budget category smartphones.
Internet searches for phones under Rs 5,000 VoLTE phones have increased and this has made the phone vendors to launch more phones supporting VoLTE feature at lower prices.
Reliance Jio is one of the first Indian operators to adopt and deploy this new technology. Given the affordability factor of Jio services with monthly tariffs starting as low as Rs 149, the demand for VoLTE devices has surged.
Analysts expect most devices to support VoLTE in future. VoLTE devices sold this quarter is twice the number of VoLTE devices sold over the same period last year.
With the Jio launch in September, the internet searches for VoLTE devices also increased, which means an increased interest in the customer interest.
More than 1.4 crore VoLTE-enabled devices were shipped into India in the September quarter. Almost all vendors say all of their smartphones support or will support this technology.
