Rare US honour for Chalameswar
Naperville, Chicago: A rare American honour has been given to Supreme Court of India Justice Jasti Chalameswar. Steve Cherico, Mayor, Naperville, Illinois, has declared that October 14 would be observed as “Justice Jasti Chalameswar Day”.
It was given to him recently in recognition of historical judgments delivered by Justice Chalameswar like striking the Clause 66 A of the Information Technology Act which facilitated freedom of expression in social media; his critical view of the current collegium system being followed in selecting senior judges of Supreme Court and High Courts in India; and invalidating the Act that considers the Aadhaar Card as the only standard document for extending government services to people and refusing such services to those without Aadhaar Card, among others.
Mayor Steve appreciated that such historical judgments of Justice Chalameswar had brought more dignity to the judicial system. Expressing his happiness over receiving the rare honour, Justice Chalameswar explained greatness of the Indian judicial system to the gathering.
He stated that he would always study the Supreme Court of America’s judgments on human rights before delivering his verdict.
