President’s daughter to contest in Delhi

New Delhi, January 15: Sharmistha Mukherjee, daughter of President Pranab Mukherjee, is fighting Delhi elections as a Congress candidate. She is being fielded from Greater Kailash in South Delhi. Her name was among the 15 candidates in the third list released on Thursday.
Sharmishta was educated in Delhi. She is a reputed and critically acclaimed Indian classical dancer who has given performances at many places across the country. She also performed in the US, China, Europe and the middle east. She received extensive training in Kathak dance from three famour gurus-Late Pandit Durgalal, Vidushi Uma Sharma and Rajendra Gangahni. She is panelist with ICCR (Indian Council of Cultural Relations). Sharmistha was described by a critic as the most unpretentious and natural Kathak artist around. She was also a film director. She partnered with director Rajesh Jala in making the internationally acclaimed film, ‘Children of the Pyre’. She also co-directed a film on contemporary Indian dance by name ‘Beyond Tradition..’.
Sharmistha is a member of the Congress party. She recently joined issue with former minister of external affairs Natwar Singh who in his book quoted her as saying something against Rajiv Gandhi, former prime minister. She described the description and interpretation of her comment as in bad taste. Her brother had contested the last general elections from West Bengal.
