Only PM Modi Can Resolve Kashmir Problem: J&K CM Mehbooba

Mehbooba Mufti says only Prime Minister Modi can resolve Kashmir problem, as he has a strong mandate.

Jammu:  Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday appealed to the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to free the valley from the present chaos.

“Only Prime Minister Modi can resolve the problem, as he has a strong mandate,” she said.

The PDP-BJP Government led by Mehbooba Mufti is struggling with nonstop violence in the State. She alleged that the situation was the result of pent-up anger amongst youth due to the failure of the UPA government to continue with the policy started by the previous NDA Government in J&K during her father Mohammad Sayeed’s rule, the PTI reported.

“I say today with authority and I will be criticised for it also. But, if anyone can find a solution to Jammu and Kashmir problem, it is Prime Minister Modi.  He has a strong mandate. Whatever decision he takes, the country will support him,” she observed. She was addressing a gathering after inaugurating a flyover.

Lauding Modi for visiting Lahore on December 25, 2015, she took a dig at the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh without taking his name.

“Before Modi, the prime minister, has also desired to go to Pakistan for over ten years. He wanted to see his home there,” she said.

Crediting the former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former CM Mufti Sayeed for starting the chapter of peace in J&K in 2002, she said that they tried their best to improve the situation in Kashmir and were successful to a large extent in short time.

Reminding that there was ceasefire (along Indo-Pak border) during Vajpayee’s rule, talks with L K Advani held in Kashmir; a process of opening cross-LoC roads was on the way, she said. During that time, militancy came down and peace returned on the borders, she said.

Later, the process came to a grinding halt, the CM said. As the next governments, both at Centre and State took a lenient view thinking that all is well and nothing needed to be done, and the process was halted, Mufti said.

The result was pent up anger that started coming out in 2008, 2009, and 2010 when the youth took to streets. Now it has spread so much that the streets are filled, and the government is forced to face the situation, she said.

Mufti alleged that some forces don’t want her government to improve the situation in Kashmir.

“Mufti Saheb, who had dreamt of peace in Kashmir, shook hand with the prime minister of our country, Narendra Modi, who has got the mandate of the people,” she said.
