PepsiCo ends contract with Dhoni

New Delhi: India’s one-day and Twenty20captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s 11-year association with PepsiCo has come to an end, indicating the slowdown of his marathon run with advertisers.

MS Dhoni is considered as one of the best finishers of the game, but cricket pundits say his recent performance indicate his finishing abilities are on wane.

Dhoni, who became one of the country’s most successful captains, was the face of both Pepsi Cola and Lay’s chips. PepsiCo, has had a history of being associated with A-listers from sport and Bollywood.

Popular names currently endorsing PepsiCo brands include cricketer Virat Kohli and actors Ranbir Kapoor and Parineeti Chopra.

Up until 2014, Dhoni endorsed 18 brands including Pepsi, Reebok, Boost, Dabur, Sony, TVS Motors, Videocon, Orient Fans and Big Bazaar, charging Rs 10-12 crore each.

Besides Pepsi, others like Sony TV and Dabur confirmed they are no longer associated with the cricketer.

In April, Dhoni quit as brand ambassador of a realty firm Amrapali, under the pressure from the Noida based disgruntled buyers who felt cheated by the company.

According to Forbes listings for 2016, Dhoni  is among the world’s highest paid athletes with the earnings of$ 27 million. Forbes estimated his salary and professional earnings at $4 million.
