Panneerselvam to replace Jaya again
- He was a stop-gap CM in 2001 too
- Visalakshi loses race
- Jaya bets on the known old horse
Chennai, September 28: Another tea vendor had become the first political executive in a State after Narendra Modi made it to the post of Prime Minister. Tamil Nadu Finance Minister O Panneerselvam was elected as the leader of the AIADMK legislature party on Sunday in place of J Jalalithaa who had to step down from the post of the chief minister following the sentence given by a special court of the CBI in Bagalore on Saturday. In fact, Panneerselvam became CM the first time within months after Narendrabhai Modi took over as chief minister of Gujarat more than 13 years ago. Panneerselvam became chief minister for the first time in 2001 when Chief Minister Jayalalithaa chose him to replace her after the Supreme Court declared her appointment as “not legal and valid” and she had to vacate the seat. For six months he was chief minister till Jayalalithaa returned in March 2002.
Panneerselvam has been preferred over Dr Visalakshi Nedunchezhian, the widow of former finance minister VR Nedunchezhian who was touted as the CM after DMK founder CN Annadurai’s death in 1969. A gynecologist by profession, Visalakshi was Dean of the Government Kasturba Gandhi Hospital in Priplicane. She joined AIADMK after the death of her husband in 2000. Jayalalithaa preferred the known devil instead of trying a new one. Panneerselvan was elected unanimously.
Governor K Rosaiah will be administering the oath of office to Panneerselvan soon, in the mean while, Jayalalithaa would be approaching Karnataka High Court on Monday for a bail.
