Opposition Announces Meira Kumar As Presidential Candidate
New Delhi: Though most of the major opposition parties extended their support to NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind in Presidential elections, Congress has announced the name of former Speaker Meira Kumar and made it a Dalit vs Dalit fight.
The opposition parties met on Thursday at Parliament House’s Library to finalise their strategy on the Presidential election and confirm the candidate for the Raisina Hill.
A total of seventeen parties attended the meeting called by Congress President Sonia Gandhi to field a presidential candidate to contest against the NDA’s candidate.
The meeting was attended by Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Ahmed Patel, AK Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and Manmohan Singh from the Congress; TMC’s Derek O’Brien; Ramgopal Yadav and Naresh Agarwal from the Samajwadi Party; Omar Abdullah of the National Conference, JDS’ Danish Ali, Satish Chandra Mishra of the BSP; RLD’s Ajit Singh; Sitaram Yechury from the CPI(M); D Raja from the CPI, DMK leader Kanimozhi; Muslim League’s Ismail, JMM’s Hemant Soren; Premachandran from the RSP; Kerala Congress leader Jose Mani; and Sharad Pawar and Praful Patel from the NCP.
Nitish Kumar’s JD-U announced that it would support Kovind thus making a considerable dent in the opposition.
