Oggu artists protest at Secretariat
HYDERABAD: About 250 to 300 Oggu Artists from ten Telangana districts under the leadership of noted artist Chukka Sathaiah today staged a protest at the Telangana Secretariat main gate.
Chukka Sathaiah told media that the government is ignoring the Oggu artists, who played a key role in the Telangana movement. Interestingly, they accused Sanskrithika Sarathi Chairman and TRS MLA Rasamayi Balakishan for picking only SC category artists and ignoring the Oggu Artists.
“We want our due share of jobs as we fought all the protests and movements for Telangana,” he said adding that they have no work to feed their families.
The artists displaying their art forms took up a massive rally from Ravindra Bharathi to the Secretariat and tried to barge into the premises. The police who were fewer in numbers at the main gate had to struggle to prevent the protesters. The Oggu artists squatted on the road against the main gate and shouted slogans seeking jobs and health insurance cards through SanskrithikaVarathi. However, the police thwarted their efforts and took them into custody.
Sathaiah flayed Balakishan that he deliberately picked 511 out of 550 artists from his SC community. He warned of intensifying the agitation to press the government to concede their demands.
Sathaiah sought that the chief minister should replicate the same facility in recognition to their role in statehood movement. It may be noted that KCR promised 550 artists jobs and health insurance cards during a conference at Madhapur Art Gallery on Apr 19. KCR also promised to offer the same facility if any leftover artists need the same. (NSS)
