DSP Pandith, the police said, may have opened fire as a last resort in self-defence. Three people who were injured were all shot in the legs, which showed that even under attack the officer was conscious not to shoot to kill, they said. The DSP’s service revolver is missing.

The fresh round of street violence came just a day ahead of a call for protests from Kashmiri separatists against the death of a protester in police action in Kashmir’s Pulwama district earlier this week when stone throwers tried to distract security forces during an operation.
