Srinagar: The killing of a police officer Mohammed Ayub Pandith by a mob of more than 200 people outside Jamia Masjid in the State capital Srinagar while prayers were on at the mosque in the old city late on Thursday evening shocked the nation. Two of the people responsible for the brutal killing were arrested on Friday.

The colleagues of the Deputy Superintendent of Police bitterly wept on Friday morning while paying tributes to him at a wreath ceremony held at Srinagar’s Police Lines before the funeral.  See Also: Kovind Files 3 Sets of Nominations for President’s Post

Chief Minister of the State, Mehbooba Mufti, who attended the ceremony, said, “There can’t be a more shameful incident than this where a cop who is trying to perform his duty is killed.”

DSP Pandith was posted on security duty outside the mosque when he was attacked by a mob of 200 to 300 people on Thursday, a senior police officer said. Three of the attackers have been identified and two of them have been arrested. See Also: Sirisha Joined RJ Studio Six Months Ago, Her Aunt Reveals

DSP Pandith, the police said, may have opened fire as a last resort in self-defence. Three people who were injured were all shot in the legs, which showed that even under attack the officer was conscious not to shoot to kill, they said. The DSP’s service revolver is missing.

The fresh round of street violence came just a day ahead of a call for protests from Kashmiri separatists against the death of a protester in police action in Kashmir’s Pulwama district earlier this week when stone throwers tried to distract security forces during an operation.  See Also: ISRO Launches PSLV With 31 Satellites From Sriharikota
